The days of mothers running themselves ragged and tearing themselves absolutely too thin in lieu of the needs of others are over. At least, they should be. After a pandemic ally grueling year, we’d like to propose those who haven’t adopted the “you can’t pour from an empty glass” attitude, do so immediately. Self-care really is the secret to giving those you love the best care you possibly can. Women can, of course, do it all. But, should they have to? Should anyone? Isn’t it well past time that “doing it all” includes caring for one’s own well being? It is definitely time, ladies, to prioritize caring for yourselves like a mother.

If anyone deserves some peace, it’s a mother. The whirlwind of activities and their organization is enough to drive anyone to drink. While enjoying some wine and chocolate, even regularly, is a surefire way to pamper yourself, here are a few more holistic suggestions.

The first is simplifying your schedule, and unplugging when you can. Why be available for everyone all of the time when you can set boundaries? Why say yes when you can say no? Organization may be the key to productivity but simplification may be the key to saving your sanity. You are not required to run on empty! You are allowed to recharge. Take time away from your smartphone with your own thoughts, sit outside and listen to nature, put someone who takes and takes and takes off for another day. Allowing yourself to rest and relax throughout the day is crucial to getting good sleep in the evening.

Prioritizing sleep can not be underestimated. Instead of killing yourself to get one or two more things done during the day, take the time to unwind and get ready for bed. See if you don’t have twice the energy tomorrow. If you find winding down at the end of the day difficult, you’re probably overdoing it. You know, everything, in general. Stretching, meditating and, again, unplugging electronically are three of the most proven ways to accomplish quieting your mind. You will have the energy for tomorrow, tomorrow.

Allow yourself some grace! If and when all of this zen propaganda doesn’t seem to be doing the trick, let it out. Did you know that swearing has been scientifically proven to reduce pain as well as boost self-confidence? Shit! Let the F-bombs commence.
